How to Care for Your Pets Between Grooming Appointments

It is always a great feeling when you leave your pet grooming appointment with your freshly groomed and sparkly clean pet in hand.

Normally, you have about 2-3 weeks from that point until you need to come back for a new appointment. With the pandemic and with our busy lives, grooming so often is not typically ideal.

Because of this, we wanted to write this article to give you some basic tips for how to care for your pets between grooming appointments. These will hopefully help to maintain the healthy coat and nails that we establish at the grooming appointment. These tips may vary for your pet depending on their coat and breed, but they are general enough to be applied to most furry friends.

  1. Brush your pet regularly with the brush that the groomer recommended (or one similar). This will help keep the coat shiny and soft for longer and will help to prevent damage.
  1. Take off your pet’s collar as much as possible while inside. This will help to prevent skin irritation.
  1. Clean their ears regularly. Use a cotton ball and an ear solution and gently rub the inside of the ear. Only use the solution recommended by your vet and never use cotton swabs. This will help keep their ears cleaner longer and prevent infections.
  1. Buff their nails every other day. While we typically don’t recommend trimming your pet’s nails on your own unless you are trained and have the right equipment, we do recommend gently buffing their nails with an emery board every night or every other night. This will help prevent them from breaking and getting damaged. It will also help keep them shorter for longer.

These are just a few tips that we wanted to share in hopes of keeping your pets healthier and cleaner for longer. Call us at Doggie Styles if you have any questions or want to hear more.
