Keeping Pets Safe in the Winter

Winter is officially here, and while some of us humans may be excited about the cooler weather, our pets probably do not feel the same.

Pets who were born and raised in Florida’s warm climate may face serious health risks during the winter that you should be aware of. The following is a list of things you can do to help keep your pets safe during the season of cold weather:

  1. Do not shave your pet’s coat down to the skin. Aside from being beautiful, your pet’s coat helps to keep them warm, and this is especially important in the winter.
  2. Humidify your home. This helps to prevent your pet’s skin from getting too dry and irritated.
  3. Try not to bathe your pets as often in the winter.
  4. Feed them a little extra each day. Do not give them too much extra, just maybe ¼ of a serving more than usual.

While it still isn’t cold enough to pull out the snow boots or the antifreeze, our furry friends were not made for this year’s abnormally long cold front. The above suggestions were from ASPCA, and are just meant to keep your pets as happy and healthy as possible.
