How to Keep Your Pets Calm on Halloween

Halloween tends to not be as fun for your pets as it is for you and your children. Between the constant ringing of the doorbell, the hundreds of strangers wearing crazy costumes and the children screaming in the streets, your pets are bound to be spooked (and not in a fun way). While it may be  a little quieter this year, there will still be trick or treaters.

To prevent your furry friends from getting too anxious on Halloween, here are a few things you can do:

  1. Have the candy outside- whether you are sitting outside handing out candy, or you leave a bowl by your front door, this will prevent the doorbell from constantly ringing and making your pets anxious.
  1. Give your pet a new toy or big treat to distract them- Something new and exciting like a toy or a big treat will consume a lot of your pet’s time and distract them from all the chaos going on around them.
  1. Give your dog attention and don’t leave them alone- this tip may not work for all pets, but if your pet is one that tends to get more anxious when left alone and out of the loop, make sure to stay with them the entire night and keep giving them attention so that they don’t feel alone. Having you to comfort them will make your pet feel calm and will prevent them from making a mess and chewing things up from anxiety.
  1. Keep your pets away from the candy- it is a known fact that pets tend to be more rebellious when anxious and mad at us for leaving them, so it is more important than ever to keep sugar and candy away from your pets on Halloween. Sugar and dogs do not mix well, so keeping them away from the candy stash can prevent them from going through even more stress.

While the tips above can definitely help to relieve some of your pets’ stress on Halloween, there are other ways to ensure they stay calm among the chaos. For more tips and to buy toys or treats to distract them, call Doggie Styles today.
