Large gatherings, bursting fireworks and loud music are some of our favorite things about the holidays, though they can be frightening for our pets. With little planning, New Year’s Eve can be exciting and safe for everyone in the household.
Safety Tips:
- Update IDs
The biggest risk on New Year’s Eve is a startled pet getting loose and becoming lost. Large noises can cause even secured pets to go into panic mode and make a harsh getaway – sometimes breaking windows. Make sure your pets are micro-chipped and always wearing an identification tag with contact info. Remember to update your address and contact information with the microchip company if you move or change your number.
- Keep Pets Inside
Keep your pet in an enclosed room, preferably one without windows. Even if loud noises don’t trigger your pet, keeping them away from fireworks and noisemakers can avoid the risk of potential burns, injuries or ingestion. If leaving them alone, don’t forget to leave food and water in the room.
- Calm
By keeping your pet in a calming environment, they will be able to calm themselves down more quickly or avoid reacting to loud triggers. Surround your pet with their favorite toys, blankets or comfort items. Pieces of your clothing will also calm them with your scent. Keep the room quiet and close windows and doors and play background music or turn on the TV for white noise.
Keep your pet in mind while planning for New Year’s Eve this year for a great holiday for all. Happy Holidays!
