Dogs need to have their nails trimmed from time to time, but how often? On average, most dogs need their nails trimmed every 1-2 months. A sign your dog’s nails need to be trimmed are if they are clicking on the floor when they walk.
Dogs’ front nails tend to grow faster than back nails, so you may not need to trim your dog’s rear nails as frequently as the front. However, how often a trim is needed depends on a variety of factors.
Activity
If your dog regularly walks on pavement, their nails will naturally wear and take longer to grow. Carpet or soft surfaces tend to grow longer nails more quickly.
Age
Older dogs tend to walk less often, which might mean they’ll need more frequent clippings than younger dogs that are very active.
Breed
Some breeds’ nails will grow more quickly than other breeds. Small dogs like Chihuahuas that spend the majority of their time indoors will definitely need to have their nails cut more often than a Golden Retriever.
Without Trimmings
Dismissing trims can cause discomfort for your dog. Long nails can often cause joint or bone issues, or result in breakage. This is painful for your pet and can require a vet visit. Some dog’s nails will curl under their feet and grow into the dog’s footpads, which hurt and can become infected.
And don’t forget, nail trimming is part of the service at Doggie Styles!
