Have you ever been walking your dog, and they stop to eat some grass? Chances are you answered, “yes.” It is quite common for dogs to do this and then vomit after. Some types of grass don’t have that effect on dogs. There are many studies and suggestions as to why they do this.
One theory is that dogs eat grass because they are feeling sick, however there is not solid evidence to back this up. However, it is important to check with your vet through a physical, fecal or blood exam to make sure your dog does not have a gastrointestinal disease.
Is grass dangerous for your dog? Most experts say that it does not pose a real risk. However, you should take note if your dog suddenly begins eating it more than usual because that could be a sign of illness. If you own a puppy that is teething, be more cautious because it could cause blockage.
So, grazing on grass is not inherently bad. If there is instinctive behavior to induce vomiting, that is when you should possibly contact your vet. While grass is not bad, it could have herbicides and pesticides sprayed on that could be toxic. Consider giving your dog a food treat to train them to stop going for grass.
