How to Prevent Matting

If you want to avoid matting of your dog’s fur, here are some steps you can take.

A dog’s fur can easily become a mess and a hassle for dog owners. If your pet has longer hair, matting might be even a bigger problem. While regular grooming helps tame the fur, be proactive in your dog’s grooming at home as well. Just like humans, they need regular upkeep.

  1. Brush your dog’s hair on a regular basis to prevent matting. Imagine all the outdoor items that get stuck in its coat when your pet plays in the grass. While dogs with shorter fur might only need to be brushed once a week, those with longer coats could need it daily. It is better to maintain a good coat than to try to clean up a knotted coat.
  2. Dogs don’t clean themselves, so bathe your pet regularly. You don’t bathe yourself only once a month, so why should your pet? Your vet will have the best recommendation for how often your pet should be washed. This is a preventative step for matting. If your pet’s hair is already matted, wait until they can get to the groomer before making a routine.
  3. Not all dog food is the same, so feed your dog the best. We eat food that helps our hair and skin. The same goes for dogs. Follow the American Feed Control Officials’ protocol for balanced food. Be sure to read the ingredients when choosing your brand.
  4. Fish oil tablets can help improve skin. Dandruff and flaking can be caused by a lack of fatty acids in your dog’s diet. Talk to your vet about the right amount of fish oil to serve your pet.
  5. If your dog’s coat is too long, get a haircut. Find a length that is manageable so that there is no unnecessary knotting.

If you have any more questions, ask your groomer about what to do. When in doubt, call Doggie Styles to make an appointment.
