How to Prevent Dog Tear Stains

Some breeds of dogs that have white fur end up with unattractive brownish-red stains underneath the eye area. This could be an indicator of a potential health problems, so if it seems to happen out of the blue, definitely contact a vet. After making sure your pet is healthy, check out a few of these tips.

  1. The quality of your food can cause excess tearing and allergic reactions. Fillers such as corn and wheat bases are inferior to high-quality, grain-free diets. You can also add supplements to your pet’s bowl to help such as organic apple-cider vinegar or buttermilk powder to meals. Use only a teaspoon when doing this.
  2. The minerals in water can cause tearing pretty quickly. If you have ever traveled with your pet and poured them water from your water bottle, you might notice the stains begin to develop. This is because of the excess minerals in the water we drink. Instead use distilled or purified water for your pet.
  3. Be sure to groom your pet and keep up with daily hygiene. You can use an eye flush such as a canine eye-wash. In addition, use a moist cotton ball with the same eye wash and dab it around the eye area. Use dry shampoo and a washcloth around the muzzle area and blow-dry after.
