National Mutt Day

July 31 is National Mutt Day

What is National Mutt Day?

July 31 is National Mutt Day, also known as mixed breed day. This holiday was created in 2005 by Colleen Paige who is a pet expert and animal welfare advocate. Mixed breed dogs, while some of the healthiest animals, are the most abandoned dogs each year. The holiday is celebrated again on Dec. 2 to raise awareness about the need to give these animals homes. About 80 percent of dogs placed in animal shelters are mixed, but purebreds in shelters are more likely to be adopted than mutts.

What are the benefits of adopting a mixed breed?

Mixed breeds on average live longer than purebreds. Additionally, these animals tend to have better health. You will have a unique-looking furry friend, and they are a less expensive option for bringing in a new friend to your home. While there is nothing wrong with owning a purebred, help celebrate all dogs on July 31st by supporting the mixed breeds. If you can’t adopt another animal, consider donating to your local animal shelter or volunteer there to support these pets. If you already own a mutt, post your pet online with the hashtag #NationalMuttDay.
