How To Keep Your Dog From Begging For Food

Does your dog continually beg for your human food? It’s time to stop giving into the convincing puppy eyes. Here are five tips to stop your dog from begging.

  • Take control of your dog’s access to your dinner table: This is a preventative measure. Your pet can’t beg for food if it isn’t around the food. Instead, bring your dog to another room during your meals.
  • Avoid eye contact with your dog: Giving your dog attention will further encourage begging. Instead, look away when your dog begins to beg.
  • Teach your dog to sit/stay: If you want your dog to stay in the same room while you eat, show him that he must stay in the same spot and not move during the meal. This will take practice, but stay consistent with your commands.
  • Stop feeding your dog from the table entirely: This is important because if your dog is fed occasionally, he will get the wrong message and think that begging is OK. Make sure everyone in your household abides by this rule to keep consistency.
  • Place human food in their dog bowl: If the human food is pet approved, it is ok to share with your animal. If you place it directly in their bowl, they will know that this is the only place that they can eat.

Good luck!
