You have most likely heard someone tell say “don’t give your dog chocolate.” While this treat might be your guilty pleasure, unfortunately your beloved pet cannot enjoy the sweet with you.
Chocolate contains cocoa which contains theobromine. This compound is toxic to dogs and other animals because they don’t have the enzyme to break it down. The dose of theobromine in the chocolate determines the effect on your dog. Your dog’s size and the amount of chocolate ingested also impacts the toxicity. Dark chocolate has the most amount of theobromine (three times as much as milk chocolate.)
If your pet snags a bite of your midnight craving, look out for symptoms like restlessness, excitement, hyperactivity, nervousness, trembling, vomiting, diarrhea, increased drinking and increased urination, increased heart rate and muscle tremors. Contact a veterinarian immediately to avoid more serious side effects like seizures and even death.
