So Santa brought you a new pet this year, and it’s the first time you’ve ever had one. So you’re not sure how to start this relationship.
First, it’s important to understand that every type of pet is different – dogs are different than cats. And not every dog or cat is the same as well.
So here are some tips – first for the first-time dog owner and then for the cat owner. If you received a different kind of pet this year, you may want to do some of your own research.
Don’t bring the dog home and just set it loose in the house. Start setting the rules immediately. It will take time but, with patience, your new dog will get used to the rules. To avoid confusion, don’t change the rules. You choose when feeding and walking time is – and where your new dog will sleep.
Don’t assume that bad behavior will change as your puppy becomes a dog. Start early to change that behavior.
If your dog will interact with other pets, start hat process early. Puppies become familiar with the socialization concept early. By three or four months, they are set in their ways.
Learn to recognize when your dog is afraid of another animal or something else in their environment. It’s important for you to learn how to manage that fear to avoid unfortunate results.
Cats and dogs are as different as night and day. Among the significant differences is that dogs always go out but cats may be totally indoors or a mix of indoors and outdoors. Cats, by nature, are very independent. They may not nestle with you as much as a dog.
However, there still needs to be some training. Cats love to play. Little toys, string and empty boxes are among their favorite toys. You will need a scratching post, or it’s likely your cat will decide your sofa will serve as a way to sharpen its claws.
Whether your cat is indoors only or indoor and outdoor, you will need to get a litter box and litter.
Finally, both your dog and cat need grooming and, especially for cats, trimming claws. Give us a call, and we can help with that part.
Most of all, enjoy your new friend. If it is your first time with a pet, your world is about to change.
