Holidays and Your Pets

We are in the midst of a month of holiday celebrations. It’s a great time for family and friends, but it’s not always the best time of year for your pets.

First there’s food. We love to eat during the holidays but much of what we consume can be dangerous for your pets. Chocolate, other sweets and baked goods, turkey and turkey skin and most table scraps can cause serious medical problems for your pets.

Holiday decorations can also be problematic. Your dog may want to play with that Christmas tree but what happens when it topples over. And avoid the additives you may want to use to keep that tree fresh all month. Also consider ornaments, tinsel and other decorations, electric lights, flowers, candles and holiday plants like poinsettias – which should be kept up higher.  They can all create medical issues for your pet.

And don’t forget holiday parties. If your pets are not used to having a lot of people around, they could exhibit different behavior. The last thing you need is for your dog to bite a friend’s child who just wanted to play.  Also, with a lot of people coming and going, make sure you know where your pets are. You don’t want a frightened pet to dash off – especially if they are not used to the outdoors.

If you’re traveling with your pet, make sure you know what to do in the car or the requirements if you are traveling by air. Also plan in advance about what you’re going to do if you are traveling without your pets.

So enjoy your holidays but remember your pets.
