Tips to Help Calm Your Pets During Storms

The Florida Public Radio Emergency Network recently announced that Gainesville has officially seen its rainiest summer ever. Our community had record-breaking rainfall in June and July.

While all this rainfall has been great for our plants and trees, thunderstorms can be a terrifying experience for any pet.

However, there are some simple ways to make sure your pet feels more comfortable whenever the sky begins to rumble.

Create a safe space for your pet.

This could be a small, interior room without windows, a laundry room, or a bathroom. Provide your pet with a blanket or tiny bed, some water and food, and some of their favorite toys. Avoid crating your pet or restricting their movements because that can result in anxiety or destructive behavior.

Minimize the storm.

Close your windows and draw your curtains shut to muffle the noise. Try to not take your pet outside during a storm.

Give your pet distractions.

Keeping them occupied can keep their mind off the storms. Give them their favorite toy to play with, groom them, play some music, or try indoor training exercises.

Keep your pet company.

Pet and cuddle your pet during a storm but don’t overdo it. Pets can sense a change in routine and may react negatively.

If your pet seems to become more anxious you can try herbal anti-anxiety medication to calm them down.

You can also consult with your veterinarian for more options.

Remember that is perfectly natural for your pet to be afraid during a storm, but these steps can help your animal adjust to these anxious conditions and confront storms with less fear.
