How Much Food Should You Give Your Pup?

Dog food manufacturers include an average amount of food required for dogs of varying weight ranges. While this is helpful, you should treat the average recommendations as a starting point for you to experiment with. In determining  your pup’s ideal amount of food, you need to understand more than just the generic average.

First, take your dog to the vet. Have your veterinarian weigh your dog and perform a physical.  Your vet will be able to give you advice on a healthy diet for your specific breed of dog. He or she might ask you about your dog’s activity level including specific exercises (if applicable). Your veterinarian might also ask what treats or non-meal snacks your dog normally intakes.

Second, find a food brand that works for your pup. This may take some trial-and-error. If you bring along the nutritional information of your current food brand to the veterinarian, he or she can better determine the proper amount of food you should be giving your pup. Your dog’s age, breed, current weight and activity level all play into determining the right food allowance.

Third, don’t forget to periodically check on your dog’s weight. Changes in activity level, training time, and extra snacks may impact their needed food allowance.

Lastly, try to feed your pup at the same time every day. Feeding at the same time will keep your dog on a bathroom schedule. Sticking to a routine will prevent your pup from experiencing digestive problems. Ask your vet how many times a day you should feed your dog.
