Summertime is finally here and for many that means that it is travel time! Whether you are driving, flying or camping, there are certain things to consider if you are planning to bring your four-legged friend along for the adventure. Below are some travel tips to make you and your dog’s journey as enjoyable as possible.
Health and Safety
- Take your dog to the vet for a checkup if you are planning on taking a long vacation. It is important that your animal’s vaccinations are up to date. Some airlines require health records for your animal.
- Make sure to pack your pet’s regular food (changing their food may cause a digestive upset) and a safe source of water. Don’t forget any medications they may be taking either!
- Make sure your dog has a sturdy leash and collar. The collar should have up-to-date information.
Choosing a Crate
Crates are required for airline travel and may make a trip in the car easier for both you and your animal.
A proper crate:
- Is large enough for your animal to stand, turn and lie down
- Has ventilation on all sides for proper air flow
- Has your name, address and phone number attached to it
- Should have a comfortable mat, some water, and your pet’s favorite toys
If your animal prefers to sleep in a bed, try to fit it in your luggage.
If You Choose to Leave Your Animal Behind
If you decide it would be better for your animal to stay home while you are on vacation, find a responsible friend or relative to watch over them. Another option is to board your animal at your local kennel.
Regardless of what you choose, make sure that your pet is comfortable with the dog-sitter or whatever kennel environment you may choose.
By planning your dog travel ahead of time, you can make the vacation a truly relaxing time for you and your dog.
