A common concern dog owners have is that their dog sheds too much. The good news is that the shedding of a dog’s coat isn’t a huge concern. However, it can be a bit of annoyance to a family and their home. Below are a few tips to help control your dog’s shedding.
- Brushing your dog
If this is something you don’t normally do, it is something you should get in the habit of doing. Brushing your dog’s coat daily can help prevent intense shedding.
- Dog food
Perhaps it is time to re-evaluate your dog’s food brand. Unfortunately, not all pet food was created equal, and it may be time to change your dog’s food. Some cheaper brands of food use a lot of filler ingredients and include less protein, which is necessary for your dog.
- Omega-3 fatty acids
Adding more of this to your dog’s diet may help decrease shedding. These supplements can be purchased at most pet stores, or you could add a little bit of olive oil to your dog’s diet.
- Make sure your dog has clean, fresh water
Dehydration can lead to dry skin, causing dogs to scratch often. Make sure your dog always has access to water when he/she likes.
- Control fleas
Dogs with flea problems tend to scratch their coat incessantly, causing them to shed. Keeping your dog free of fleas will stop this from occurring.
