Protecting your pet from the cold

Like hot weather, cold weather can be dangerous to your pet. Cold conditions can affect your pet: follow our tips to make sure they stay safe and warm.

  • Keep your pet indoors. Pets can still be taken outside for walks and playtime, but they are happiest warm and cozy inside.
  • Help neighborhood outdoor cats. If there are stray or feral cats in your neighborhood, consider providing them with food, water and shelter from the cold.
  • Be careful with animals under your car. Before starting your engine, check to make sure there are no animals under the hood.
  • Protect paws from salt. Salt and other chemicals used to melt snow can be damaging to your pet’s paws.
  • Avoid antifreeze poisoning. Antifreeze is a deadly poison to animals and must be kept away from them.
  • Have some blankets and sweaters on hand. Many pets love cuddling with blankets, and shorthaired dogs can benefit from a warm sweater.
  • Brush your pet to avoid matting and avoid having them shaved in winter.

That being said, the cold season is the best season for cuddling with your pet! Enjoy your special time together.
