Common Household Dangers for Pets

Threats inside the house:

  • Human medication, such as painkillers, can be toxic to all animals.
  • Toys with movable parts can pose a choking hazard for pets.
  • Chocolate is poisonous to cats, dogs and ferrets.
  • Insect control remedies may be toxic to pets.

Threats outside the house:

  • Antifreeze that contains ethylene glycol attracts pets but is highly toxic.
  • Chemicals used on gardens and lawns, such as fertilizer, can be fatal to a pet.
  • Cans and garbage pose a problem as some pets may want to eat older foods or can get their heads stuck somewhere.
  • De-icing salts used to melt snow can pose a danger to pets and their paws.
