Just like you communicate with your own hair stylist, you also need to communicate with your pet’s groomer to ensure that he gets the best care. We’ve all gone to get a haircut and left unhappy, usually due to a lack of communication between yourself and the stylist. How much is “just a little bit off the top?” You learn to very specific and explain your preferences so that you don’t end up with a hair disaster. Your pup deserves that same courtesy. Follow these tips for the most important things to communicate to your groomer so that Sparky receives the best care possible.
Explain your pet’s history. Have you noticed that he gets a rash with a certain brand of shampoo? Is there a sore spot on his back that you always try to avoid? These are important things that your groomer needs to know before working on your pet. Your dog can’t explain his health history for himself, and so he will rely on you to be sure that the groomer understands his health needs. Coming prepared with a list of things to discuss can keep this process quick and easy for both you and your groomer and ensures that you don’t forget anything.
Bring pictures if you’re looking for a specific cut. This is a common practice to do at the salon but can also be applied to the groomer. How short do you want the hair? How do you want the tail to look? Sometimes words fail to capture your vision, but a picture is a clear way to communicate what you want.
Be honest. If you want to create a long-lasting relationship with your groomer, then you need to be able to be honest. Did you love the cut, or were you looking for something else? Too long? Too short? This sort of constructive criticism can help your groomer understand what you are looking for in future appointments. How often have you gone to a new stylist and have them achieve your perfect cut and color in one appointment? It’s a rare occurrence. You usually have to go back a few times before you and your stylist really understand each other. The same goes for your groomer. Honest feedback is the only way to ensure that you build that relationship.
